SUMMARY:Keeping Your Cool in Close Quarters™
DESCRIPTION:Docking is one of the most requested boating skills and one of the biggest sources of stress for recreational boaters. Whether you own a boat or charter\, successful cruising in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest means knowing how to go to new places. Cruising with confidence to go to new marinas with friends and family members who are new to boating will transform your entire boating experience. \nKeeping Your Cool in Close Quarters™ is Voyage Makers’ signature docking and boat handling clinic. This hands-on training program focuses on practical boat control\, marina maneuvering\, crew communication and decision-making in real-world conditions. Participants practice repeatedly in a supportive environment designed to build both skill and confidence. \nUnlike many boating courses that focus primarily on theory\, this program emphasizes repetition\, judgment and situational awareness. Students learn how experienced skippers think\, communicate and adapt while maneuvering in marinas\, fuel docks and confined waterways. \nWhether you are preparing for boat ownership\, a bareboat charter\, or simply want greater confidence at the helm\, this program helps you become calmer\, more capable and more effective around docks and marinas. \nThis clinic combines practical seamanship with decision-making skills that help skippers understand not only how to handle their boats in close-quarters\, but how to prepare their crew and feel stronger for next time. The result is greater confidence\, safer cruising and more enjoyable time on the water. This is a hands-on intensive weekend focused on docking techniques designed to give you the confidence you need to explore and enjoy cruising this season and for a lifetime. \nJoin us with our partners at Seaport Yacht Charters.  \nIdeal for new owners\, charter clients and coastal cruisers looking to expand their cruising range throughout the Gulf Islands\, Desolation Sound and beyond. \n\nCompetencies\n\nItinerary Planning for Anchor deployment\nScope calculations and tidal considerations\nBottom assessment and holding characteristics\nAnchorage selection and planning\nSwing circle management\nOvernight anchoring procedures\nWeather and wind shift assessment\nStern tie techniques\nAnchor recovery procedures\nEmergency anchoring strategies\nCruising risk management\n\nItinerary\n\nDay 1:  Arrival after 3:00 p.m.\,  Theory and communication briefing. SUMMARY:Skipper's Mindset™ Workshop - Seaside Talks & Training
DESCRIPTION:The best skippers aren’t defined by their logbooks. They’re defined by the decisions they make.   \nJoin The Voyage Makers and Tracy Sarich for an honest\, dockside conversation about what it actually takes to command a vessel. This isn’t a lecture on knots or navigation rules (but we will talk about that). This is a deep dive into the situational awareness\, judgment under pressure and presence of mind that separates a capable boater from a confident skipper. \nWhether you are preparing for your first local cruise or dreaming of an offshore passage\, this talk will shift your perspective on what it truly means to be “in charge.” \n\nWhat You’ll Learn\nThis interactive workshop focuses on the “mental game” of seamanship. We explore how to go further and push your boundaries safely\, ensuring that everyone on board—including you—is having a great time. \nKey discussion points include: \n💎Risk Assessment: How to evaluate conditions and your crew’s capabilities before things get sporty. \n💎Engagement\, Morale & Readiness: Strategies to keep your crew aligned and excited – and ready – regardless of their experience level. \n💎Decision-Making: Regardless of your experience\, your mindset influences your approach to passage planning\, weather\, close-quarters handling and anchoring. \n💎Toolkits: Attendees will have access to tools and checklists to make preparing your boat and your next cruise easier. \n\nTake It Further – Put the Mindset into Motion\n 🧰 Hands-On Coaching & Private Training: On-water docking and boat handling training is available by appointment for those who want real-time feedback and technical coaching. Contact us for details. \n 🧰 Certification: Visit our Course Calendar for upcoming skill-building opportunities. \n\nEvent Details\n✅Cost: FREE and open to the public. \n✅Location: Port Sidney Marina \n✅Requirements: None! Just bring your curiosity and your questions. \n\nAbout the Series\nSeaside Talks & Training Series is a weekly dockside program focused on helping you get more from your time on the coast – whether you’re boating\, paddling\, or exploring the water’s edge.
